Lavon Lake: the East Fork reservoir, its enlarged pool and fishing cover

One reservoir, two important eras

Lavon Lake lies on the East Fork of the Trinity River. The Corps’ project account describes its purposes as flood control, water supply and recreation. Construction of the original dam began in 1948 and finished in 1954; Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) lists 1953 as the impoundment year. These dates describe different stages, not an error to smooth over in a visitor guide.

An enlargement changed the way to interpret old lake descriptions. The Corps says a later water-supply modification raised the conservation pool from 472 to 492 feet above mean sea level and was ready for beneficial use in 1975. The current 492-foot pool reference therefore should not be used to reconstruct the original reservoir’s shoreline. TPWD lists the contemporary lake at 21,400 surface acres and a 59-foot maximum depth, both reference characteristics rather than an exact measurement of today’s open water.

An arm of timber and a shoreline of rock

The TPWD lake profile distinguishes standing timber in the upper East Fork arm and the Sister Grove/Pilot Grove Creek arm from riprap along the dam. It describes aquatic vegetation in some small bays and coves when present; that qualification matters because a patch of vegetation may not exist in the same place from season to season. The Corps’ flood-control role also means water elevations can change for reasons unrelated to recreation.

A trip planned around timber is different from one planned around the dam’s rocky edge. Neither a directory coordinate nor a single lake-wide elevation tells a boater how much clearance a particular channel has. Use the current level as context, watch for marked hazards, and confirm the specific access point’s condition with its operator before launching.

Why crappie and catfish draw attention

TPWD identifies largemouth bass, white bass, channel and blue catfish, and crappie as predominant species. It highlights crappie in winter and spring: schools can use deep structure during colder months and move toward shallower spawning water in spring. The agency also notes opportunities for bass along cover and for catfish in the reservoir. These are published fishing patterns, not a statement that one technique or area will work today.

Regulations need particular care here. TPWD explicitly notes a special catfish regulation for Lavon; consult its lake-specific bag and size limits instead of assuming generic statewide rules. Review the rules before a fishing trip and check any updated agency notice at the time of travel.

Three separately listed parks

East Fork, Clear Lake and Lavonia each have a distinct federal campground listing for Lavon Lake. Use those pages to compare reservation requirements, facilities and current availability. The directory’s coordinates represent park locations, not surveyed positions for boat ramps; do not navigate directly to a presumed launch from a campsite pin.

The TPWD access page is another starting point for selecting an entry to the lake. Check the operator’s current park notices, especially when level changes or maintenance may affect a chosen ramp. Having three listed parks does not mean all three provide the same facilities on any particular day.

End the visit without moving invasive species

TPWD posts a zebra-mussel boater advisory for Lake Lavon and instructs visitors to clean, drain and dry boats, trailers and gear before moving to another water body. That instruction is relevant after a fishing or boating day regardless of which park was used. Treat the NOAA observation on LakeWatchers as a dated pool measurement, not an inspection of access or a replacement for the agency’s latest safety notices.

Each site below links to the official listing it came from. Ramp closures depend on each ramp's design and the lake level, and most operators don't publish them in real time, so confirm with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District before you launch.

Shoreline and docks. Shoreline use on Lavon Lake is managed by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District. Whether private docks are allowed, and where, depends on that operator's shoreline rules. Before making an offer on waterfront property, confirm with the operator whether a dock permit exists and whether it transfers to a new owner.

Flood pool and easements. The normal pool is 492.00 ft MSL and the flood pool reaches 503.50 ft MSL, a 11.5 ft difference. Property near the water may carry flowage easements that limit building below a set elevation. Check the deed, a survey and the operator's rules before buying.

Nearby towns. Wylie, TX. Property taxes, utilities, HOA covenants and short-term rental rules vary between towns and counties.
