Lake Georgetown: a rocky San Gabriel reservoir and its public parks
A dam on the North Fork
The Corps’ Lake Georgetown history places the reservoir on the North Fork of the San Gabriel River, in the Brazos River system. It says the dam was completed in 1979 as part of a flood-control project and the lake’s parks opened in 1981. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) gives 1980 as the impoundment year. Those dates refer to different events; none should be silently substituted for another.
The Corps also records an older landscape of named river crossings. Booty, Russell and Box Crossings were inundated by the reservoir, while Hunt Crossing remains above the water near Tejas Park. That is a specific piece of local history, not a claim that today’s park entrances line up with those former crossings. Modern visitors should follow current park maps rather than try to navigate from historic place names.
Why it feels different from a flat-water lake
TPWD lists the reservoir at 1,297 surface acres, with a maximum depth of 85 feet and a conservation-pool elevation of 791 feet above mean sea level. It describes steep limestone banks, gravel-to-boulder shorelines, and water that changes from clear to slightly stained as one moves upstream. The agency notes that changing water levels make it difficult for aquatic vegetation to establish; rock ledges, boulders and some standing timber are more characteristic cover here than continuous weed beds.
Those details make the level reading especially relevant to a shoreline outing. A difference from conservation pool may change how much rock is exposed and where a boat can approach a bank, but an elevation reading alone cannot certify any particular landing or launch. Check the date and source on the level card, then confirm the access site’s current notice before using it.
Rock, timber and spring fish
The TPWD fishing guide lists largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, catfish, white bass and hybrid striped bass among predominant species. It describes smallmouth as concentrated mainly toward the lower reservoir, with largemouth using rock and some wood cover across the lake. TPWD also describes a spring white-bass run up the North Fork, beginning around February in its usual seasonal account. That is a reason to consider the riverward end in season, not a promise that the run is happening today.
The agency identifies cedar-tree fish habitat installed in the reservoir and provides a habitat-structure viewer for mapped locations. Consult current Texas fishing rules before keeping a fish. Conditions, seasons and access can vary independently of a typical species description.
Pick the park that suits the trip
Cedar Breaks Park, Jim Hogg Park and Russell Park are three separately listed federal access and recreation areas along Lake Georgetown. Their campground pages are the appropriate place to compare facilities, reservations and current restrictions. The coordinates in the site directory are park positions, not surveyed boat-ramp pins; select the actual entrance and confirm any launch arrangements with the park.
TPWD’s lake access guide describes the available launching and shore-access options. If a trip depends on one particular ramp, check the latest operator information instead of assuming a park will offer identical access at every water level.
Leave the lake ready for the next visitor
TPWD posts a zebra-mussel boater advisory on its Lake Georgetown page. Clean, drain and dry boats, trailers, livewells and gear when leaving, and follow the current rules on transporting aquatic organisms. This applies even after a short visit. Public access and fish habitat both depend on taking a few minutes to prevent the spread of invasive species.
