A Brazos River lake with contrasting shores

Possum Kingdom Reservoir occupies the Brazos River in Palo Pinto and Young counties. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) lists 1941 as the impoundment year, 15,588 surface acres and the Brazos River Authority as controlling authority. Its operational-pool reference is 999 feet. The dated level reading on this page can be compared with that reference, but it cannot by itself establish whether a specific ramp is usable.

TPWD describes a mostly rocky shore. Cliffs and bluffs mark the lower reservoir, while shallower water and shoreline vegetation characterize more of the upper end. Points, drop-offs, docks, standing timber and laydowns add different kinds of fish cover. The agency’s 2022 fisheries survey describes the reservoir as a mainstem impoundment and identifies the Brazos River Authority as its operator. That survey and the lake profile are useful together: one records sampled conditions and public ramp positions, while the other describes the broader lake.

Fish and habitat

The TPWD profile lists largemouth bass, white crappie, striped and white bass, and channel and blue catfish as predominant species. It notes that golden-alga blooms affected the fishery in earlier years, particularly 2001, 2003 and 2010. Those are historical events, not a statement about current water quality. TPWD also describes seasonally present aquatic vegetation and brush or artificial structures. Anglers can use these documented habitat types to choose an area, then consult the current fishing report before making assumptions about a present bite.

The lower bluff shoreline and upper river reach suggest different approaches. A plan centered on rocky points and steep changes near the lower lake differs from one centered on shallower upper-water cover. Fishing rules can change, so use the agency’s current regulation link instead of figures repeated here.

Public access needs a level check

TPWD’s access directory identifies public ramps in Brazos River Authority recreation areas and at Possum Kingdom State Park. It warns that fluctuating water levels can affect usability and directs visitors to the authority for current ramp conditions. The directory distinguishes ramps that work at various levels from others described as accessible at higher levels. These are site-specific statements; no one status should be applied to the entire shore.

The August 2022 TPWD ramp survey records public-ramp coordinates for Public Ramp, North D & D and South D & D. Their separate positions provide map locations, while the survey date limits what can be inferred about present use. Before setting out

The state park offers a different access setting from the authority recreation areas; TPWD’s park page describes its boat launch, camping and other activities. Check its current notices if that is the intended destination. For an authority site, check the current BRA information linked from TPWD’s access listing. Compare those site notices with the timestamped level and forecast, especially when levels have shifted. A surveyed location is a starting point for planning, not a live availability report.
