Fish cover, rebuilt by hand

Table Rock Lake fills the valleys of the White River and its tributaries southwest of Branson, Missouri, and its southern arms reach into Arkansas. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates the dam. Much of the woody cover anglers fish today was put there on purpose, not left over from the original valley.

The Missouri Department of Conservation’s Table Rock fishing prospects describe that work. A large project from 2007 to 2013 placed more than 1,400 fish habitat structures in the lake. Another, funded by Bass Pro Shops from November 2022 to March 2024, rebuilt or newly created 751 brush piles. MDC publishes their locations online and in its free MO Fishing app. A later MDC project placed cedar trees in shallow water within Table Rock State Park specifically so bank anglers could reach them, and replenished brush piles in the Kings River and Big Indian Creek arms.

Fishing by arm, not by lake

Table Rock is best understood as a set of river arms, each with its own character. MDC’s prospects say crappie are densest in the James, Kings and Long Creek arms, and that walleye move up the river arms to spawn around early March. Paddlefish gather each spring in the upper James River Arm above Cape Fair, and MDC sets a minimum length for snagged fish. The agency also says largemouth and spotted bass make up most of the black bass in the river arms, while smallmouth are a substantial share in the main lake between the Highway 86 bridge and Campbell Point. Limits on spotted bass are being revised, so read the current Missouri regulations, and Arkansas rules on that state’s water, before you keep fish.

Cape Fair, a Corps campground on the upper James River Arm, puts campers close to that end of the lake. Mill Creek sits on the White River Arm closer to Branson.

The dam that created a trout fishery

Table Rock’s most surprising effect is downstream. MDC’s Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery, just below Table Rock Dam, explains that the lake is deep enough that water near the bottom stays cool, averaging 48 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. When the dam generates electricity, that cold water flows into Lake Taneycomo. MDC says the release ended the native warm-water fishery there but made ideal conditions for trout.

The hatchery is MDC’s largest trout-rearing facility. MDC says its construction began in 1957 and trout production in 1958, and that it now raises 350,000 to 400,000 pounds of rainbow and brown trout a year, with 80 percent going into Taneycomo. The grounds have about three miles of trails, picnic areas and a concrete boat ramp onto Taneycomo. MDC notes a popular five-mile float from that ramp to its Cooper Creek Access, especially during generation. Water levels below a hydropower dam can change quickly, so anyone floating or wading should plan around the release schedule.

The dam end: visitor center, lakeshore trail and a beach

The Corps’ Dewey Short Visitor Center is at the south end of Table Rock Dam. Recreation.gov’s listing for nearby Moonshine Beach Recreation Area describes exhibits, lake views and a film about the area and the dam’s construction. Moonshine Beach itself is a large sandy swimming beach with a boat ramp, a picnic area and a large group shelter. The roughly two-mile Table Rock Lakeshore Trail runs from the visitor center to the Table Rock State Park marina.

Table Rock State Park rounds out that end of the lake with campsites along the shoreline, yurts and a marina that rents boats and paddleboards. The park has no designated swimming beach, so swimmers who want sand should head to Moonshine Beach instead. Opening dates, rentals and reservations change by season. Confirm them with each operator, and compare the current lake level with your chosen ramp before you launch.
