The dam and the river below it

Greers Ferry Lake exists because of a dam on Arkansas’s Little Red River. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ timeline dates construction from 1959 to 1962 and records President John F. Kennedy’s dedication in October 1963. The project was authorized for flood control and hydropower, not solely for recreation. A day on the lake and a day along the Little Red below the dam are therefore different plans: dam operations and access along the river should be checked separately from a lake campground reservation.

The Corps describes developed recreation around the lake, but a park description cannot tell you today’s navigable depth at a specific cove. Compare a recent level with an operator notice before launching; a lake-wide figure is not a substitute for checking conditions at the access point you intend to use.

An island hike is not a roadside stop

One of Greers Ferry’s most distinctive outings is Sugar Loaf Mountain National Nature Trail. The Corps says its trail is on an island at the western end of the upper lake and is reachable only by boat. It describes a courtesy dock at the trailhead and a walk to elevated views. Plan the boat return, weather, daylight and landing conditions before choosing this hike; the presence of a dock in a guide cannot guarantee it is usable on the day of a visit.

A visitor without a boat has a different option at Mossy Bluff National Nature Trail, which starts near the Corps visitor center and overlooks the Little Red River below the dam. The two trails should not be confused: one requires water access and the other offers a land-based view of the dam-area landscape. Check any posted trail restrictions before setting off.

Fishing cover created and managed on purpose

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Greers Ferry fishery account discusses largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass, walleye, crappie and white bass. Anglers can use that species mix to choose which current report and rules to read; the list does not predict today’s catch. The Corps’ lake and tailwater recreation descriptions should not be collapsed into one fishery either. Check the water body and the current Arkansas fishing guide before selecting tackle or assuming a limit.

AGFC also describes a fish-habitat project on the lower lake: tree-based structures were placed near Goat and Scout islands to add cover for bass and other fish. This is evidence of deliberate habitat work, not a promise that a particular tree pile is marked, safe to approach or holding fish now. Use an agency map and a recent reading rather than navigating by an old article alone.

Match a park to the way you visit

Choctaw Campground lists camping, a swimming area and a boat ramp. Devils Fork Campground lists camping and a swimming area, but its facility description does not promise a ramp at the campground. If a boat launch is essential, confirm the exact launch separately instead of assuming every waterside campsite supplies one. Reservation details, swim access and ramp conditions belong to the operator’s current listing, not to a fixed claim about all lake parks.

The island trail, a river overlook and a campground swim call for different equipment and safety checks. Ask which one the group really wants, confirm the relevant park or boat access, and leave shorelines free of litter. The Corps’ recreation information is the starting point for park-specific notices; a lake-wide elevation alone cannot establish that a chosen beach, dock or ramp is open.
