Water supply on the West Fork

Lake Conroe lies on the West Fork of the San Jacinto River in Montgomery and Walker counties. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) lists a 1973 impoundment, 20,118 surface acres and the San Jacinto River Authority as the reservoir’s controlling authority. Its conservation-pool reference is 201 feet above mean sea level. Those figures describe the managed reservoir; an observed level and a site’s current notice are more useful for deciding whether a particular launch works today.

The lake changes character from south to north. TPWD describes open water across much of the lower two-thirds, with bulkheads and boat docks along its shore. Upper reaches include the Sam Houston National Forest and standing timber near the river channel. That contrast helps explain why a trip aimed at docks or marinas needs a different route from one headed toward the wooded upper water. TPWD warns that timber can sit just under the surface near conservation pool, so it deserves particular attention during navigation.

Fishing cover beyond the shoreline

The TPWD fishing profile names largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and white and hybrid striped bass as predominant fish. It describes largemouth habitat around docks and marinas during parts of spring and fall, and deeper cover in other seasons. Hybrid striped bass add an open-water option; channel catfish occur through the year. These are patterns described by the agency, not a daily forecast or a guarantee of a catch.

TPWD also reports four constructed fish-habitat reefs created with the river authority and other partners. Its habitat-structure viewer is the place to look for mapped reef positions. Do not substitute a general shoreline description for a chart or assume timber, submerged structure or a reef is safe to approach at any water level. The agency’s lake profile links the current fishing report and rules, including special largemouth-bass provisions; check those links when planning to fish.

Separate launch choices around the lake

The TPWD access directory identifies Cagle Recreation Area in the national forest, Scott’s Ridge near the FM 1097 bridge, and a public ramp at the end of FM 830 as distinct launch choices. It lists the Forest Service as the operator for Cagle and Scott’s Ridge and TPWD as the maintainer of the FM 830 ramp. Cagle also has a federal campground listing. Use these operator pages to compare the part of the lake you want to reach and to confirm current access.

The TPWD 2021 fisheries survey records coordinates for all three ramps. They are useful map points, but its ramp-condition observations belong to August 2021. They should never be read as today’s inspection. In particular, the survey’s historical condition for FM 830 does not establish whether the ramp is usable now. A call or current notice from the operator is more reliable for a launch decision.

Before setting out

TPWD characterizes Lake Conroe’s water as slightly to moderately stained by algae and notes modest typical fluctuations, but neither description replaces a current observation. Compare the dated lake-level card with the conservation pool, then check the selected site and the weather. The wooded upper channel, open lower lake and managed shoreline each present different route choices. Planning around the specific access point and current conditions is more useful than treating Lake Conroe as one uniform body of water.
